Fishing - Canada, British Columbia North

Fishing trips to Northern British Columbia - Skeena River, Kitimat River, Gilloytees, Kildala and Kalum River. Fly fishing or spin fishing for steelhead and salmon. Fishing for steelhead on the Skeena River system is considered to be the best steelhead fishing in the world. We fish for world record steelhead and salmon on trophy waters. We feature the Kitimat River, its lower tidal section, the Douglas Channel and its freshwater micro-streams Gilloytees and Kildala, the lower Skeena River and Kalum River. Wild steelhead and salmon are at the heart of what makes the rivers of this area so special.

Kitimat River. First trips for monster steelhead start from mid March and continue until early May. In June and July we target the largest of salmon species, the chinook. In July, the pink and chum salmon arrive in the thousands. During the August and September months the agressive and acrobatic coho salmon will arrive. We take you on our rafts and drifboats down this 18 mile stretch of Kitimat River before it enters the saltwater.

Kitimat River Lower Tidal Section. Jetboat trips into the tidal section of the Kitimat River for fresh chinook is our June-July destination. During the change in tides, schools of salmon enter the freshwater destined for the rivers upper reaches. These salmon are very fiesty and one can expect the pull of a large chinook during this time period.

Gilloytees and Kildala. Venturing from the Kitimat marina we take you into the saltwater of the Douglas Channel. A short trip into paradise we run the jetboats into micro-streams like Gilloytees and Kildala targeting chinook and coho salmon. Chinook salmon enter these small rivers in June and July, the coho in August and September.

Kalum River. The Kalum River produces record size steelhead as well chinook salmon. April is prime time for the steelhead as well October when they run into this small tributary of the Skeena. Joining the steelhead in October are fresh coho salmon arriving from the lower Skeena in Prince Rupert. We drift the Upper Kalum with our rafts and driftboats making this class 1 river a must for the guided angler.

Skeena River. The world class Skeena River receives a large run of all 5 salmon species as well steelhead. The Skeena River has produced world record fish well into the 100lb. range. Our guided trips begin in late June and last until early October. During this season we use our covered jetboats to wisk you away in search of salmon and steelhead.

Fly Fishing, Spin Fishing. Fishing can be done with fly fishing gear or with spin fishing equipment and by wading or from the drift boat. The professional fishing guide will pick you up from your accomodation in the morning and will take you to the river. He will show you the fishing places, techiques and so on. In the afternoon when the fishing day is over he will bring you back to the lodge. Our morning begins with a 6.30 wake-up call with a hot breakfast ready by 7. Anglers are geared up and off to the river by 8. The pools and runs we fish are accessed by rafts and driftboats only. We feel this is the finest way to fish. It is very stealthy and each pool is covered with maximum 2-3 guided anglers. By noon we have fished 1-3 pools/runs. Lunch is served, hot beverages, fresh breads and sweets are on the menu, etc. We finish the late afternoon after another 2-3 pools and try to be back at the lodge by 18.30-19. Supper is served at 19.30. After dinner guests can enjoy the comforts of the lodge mingling, reading by the fire, playing cards, darts, etc. By 22-23 time most anglers are ready for bed. Guests can request a schedule catered to their own liking as this is your holiday

Fly Fishing Tackle. For avid fly anglers we do recommend that you bring at least two rods. Personally the Upper Kalum is a excellent spey casting river as many pools are sidelined with overhanging trees, while the lower section and other streams are covered with single handed rods as trees are not as close to the shoreline. Rod selection for Steelhead and Salmon are 7-9 wt rods 9-14 ft long. Our selection includes Sage, G-Loomis and Fenwick rods. Suggestion for reels should be large arbor 3.8"-4.5" with spare spools for a variety of water conditions and flows. When it comes to fishing lines a full floating system with a multi-tip is recommended. Sink tips we use are type 4-8. Airflo and Rio are excellent lines. Use monofilament line for tippet, we recommend Maxima Ultragreen in 25 lb-8 lb test, this helps to make tapered leaders in a variety of lengths. Fly selection we recommend are hairwing patterns, leeches in a variety of color, as well large dry flies. For example Glo Bug, Green Spruce, Pearlabou, Pink Passion, Pink Polar Shrimp, Pixies revenge, Leech, Rolled Muddler, Russian Fly, Wooly Bugger, Egg Sucking Leech, Popcicle. Flies can be purchased from your guide if you are interested in trying the local patterns.

Spin Fishing Tackle. For anglers who prefer spin fishing we suggest a rod for steelhead and salmon that is 8 ft. long with a reel loaded with 15 lb. test monofilament. Anglers who are bait fishermen we suggest Ambassadeur 5000-6500 reels with a 8-9 ft rod spooled with 15 lb test. Tackle should include a variety of lures like Ironheads, Koho 35-45's, Croc's, spinners, jigs and BC Steel. Float fishermen should bring numerous floats either in foam or cork, hooks in size 1-2/0. Weights used can be either split shot or coiled lead with rubber tubing. Swivels are a must and size is not that important. As for bait (salmon roe) it is available at a cost. All tackle can be supplied as we have a well stocked supply including numerous rods and reels for our clients.
