World class fly fishing for
atlantic salmon on Iceland's best salmon river - East Ranga.
East Ranga has been one of Iceland´s most productive river for over 10
years. With increasing knowledge and practice of
conservation management, East Rangá has well earned its place as
one of Iceland´s top salmon rivers.
East
Ranga.
The East Ranga is one of the
most beautiful and prolific rivers in Europe. In 2009 East Ranga
had a wonderful season, finishing number 2 in Iceland
rivers, with the second most number of salmon caught that year.
The season in the
East Ranga closed with 3989 salmon caught. East Ranga is located in southern part of Iceland
about 100 km from Reykjavik, near the neighbouring river West
Ranga. The stability
is why the East Ranga produces such high numbers of
salmon per rod/day. It is never low and it is seldom if ever
coloured due to flooding and heavy rains.
Fly Fishing.
Fishing is on 8 beats over a 22 km stretch of river and maximum
of 16 rods offering a nice variety of waters and lots of space.
Another pleasing fact is the steady growth in numbers of 2
winter salmon in late June and early July which average about 14
lbs. Every day the guide will take you to
different pools on the river. We receive only small groups of fishermen at a time
so you can be sure that any detail will be taken care of, just relax and enjoy your
fishing. We have only 2 fishermen for 1 English-speaking guide who
is expert on the river.
Flies.
Good flies for East Ranga river are for example Frances, Black &
Blue, Black Sheep,
Snaelda, Sunray Shadow and Willie Gunn. Most salmon are caught on 1" tubes.
Equipment and
Clothing. We recommend 12-15'
foot double handed rods for lines #8-11. If you bring your own gear
it is mandatory to have it disinfected on arrival at Keflavík
international airport. You should bring warm and waterproof clothes
since it can get wet and cold even in mid-summer when temperatures may
drop down to 0° C, the average being between 8 and 15°.
The temperature can rise over 20° C on warm summer days.
Accomodation. Exclusive
East Ranga fishing lodge is centrally located at the river
offering a panoramic view of the spectacular snow-capped Mt.
Hekla. The lodge complex is comprised of 8 buildings, all
combined with 1500 sqm veranda, Jacuzzi and sauna. Guests are
accommodated in tastefully furnished double rooms with a private
bath. One main building houses the kitchen and spacious dining
area where gourmet meals are served. The second main building
houses the living room filled with comfy, overstuffed leather
chairs and couches plus a full service bar. There are 18 double
rooms with a private bathroom with a shower.
