Fly Fishing - New Zealand, Mataura

Fly fishing for brown trout and rainbow trout in New Zealand, South Island. Come over and visit the extraordinary Mataura River. From our home base in Gore, we can have you into some serious fly fishing in less than ten minutes or we can take it a bit more leisurely. Not only is the Mataura river very close but there are over 25 rivers and streams within 2 hours drive as well.

Fly Fishing. Southlands rivers and streams are a mecca to dry fly fishers throughout the world but the pearl among them is undoubtedly the Mataura river with its reputation as one of the best brown trout rivers in the world. It is famous for its hatches and spinner falls and is the best 'match the hatch' fishing in New Zealand. At Mataura valley we specialise in 'sight fishing' and Southland's clear clean rivers and streams are well suited to this method of fishing.

From meandering lowlands to bustling headwaters the Mataura river valley has something for everyone. Spot and stalk wild browns or 'match the hatch' and fish, the rise. The Mataura river provides challenges at each new turn. The guide will take you to different  rivers with great population of rainbows and browns of good size having always the possibility of catching fish between 4 and 8 pounds, that will ensure you an amazing fishing experience.

Equipment. We suggest fly rods rods of 8-9 ft and Weight 5-6 cover most needs. Lines of DT or WF in greys, dull greens are best as bright coloured lines will spook the fish. Light Gore-Tex type waders are excellent or shorts and thermal leggings. A warm windproof and waterproof jacket is essential. Dull or earthen coloured fast drying clothes and warm micro-fleece/polypropylene style underclothes are recommended because the temperature can range from 5 to 30 degrees C throughout the season. Good quality stout tramping boots, wading boots, felt soled. Polaroid glasses with yellow or amber lenses and a hat are a must, wide brimmed or legionnaire style is best. A high SPF sun block is recommended, as the New Zealand sun can be very harsh.

Flies. Standard international patterns like pheasant tail, gold ribbed hares ear, hare and copper flashback and bead-head varieties in  sizes 14-20 work well. Dry flies Adams, Blue Dun, Dads Favourite and variations tied no-hackle, parachute, paradun or CDC style again in sizes 14-20 work well.

Accomodation. Fish for a day, or stay for a month, we can find the fish and help organise your accommodation. From 100 year old fishing cottages, farm or house stays to hotel/motels, we can cover your accommodation needs.

Travel Arrangements. Fishing trips to New Zealand will be arranged during the fishing season and the packages can be booked according to the client’s preferred dates subject to availability. Customers will take flights to New Zealand, Duned or Invercargill. We are only 1 1/2 hours from Dunedin airport or 45 minutes from Invercargill airport.
