| Fly fishing and spin
fishing on Tambopata river in Peru.
Only a few minutes from Cuzco, this is one of the most pristine
and unspoiled areas in the Amazon rainforest, housing more
species of animals than any other place on earth.
Like all the animals in the reserve, fishes are wild and
ferocious, huge and strong. Payara is one of them. We invite you
to enjoy with us the exciting bites, hard fighting, high jumping
of this ferocious fish.
Tambopata. Our base for this fishing adventure is a nice
Lodge and Research Center located approx 30 miles away
from Puerto Maldonado in a straight line, and approximately 75
miles on the river route, in the heart of the Tambopata Candamo
National Reserve.
Fly Fishing, Spin Fishing.
The waters of Tambopata River offer us a variety of fishes such
as Payaras, Pacu, Catfish. Payara is a strong fish, very fast, with
a big tail and a couple of big teeth in the lower jaw. They live in extremely fast
water and take both lures and flies with a savage force. There’s a lot of black volcanic rocks in the
river and the Payara hunt sardines very close to the shore, the
technique is to cast from the rocks with spinning or fly fishing
tackle any lure or fly with brilliant colours. Pacu takes only
fruits and fish meat, we use sardines for bait. Same technique is used on all
the catfish.
Fishing season.
The fishing season starts early July and ends
in October. The better months are August, September and October.
Full moon is not recommended because the possibilities of rain
and muddy waters are high.
Fishing Tackle. We suggest to bring at least 2 rods of medium-heavy to heavy
action, from 7 ½ to 9 foot, bait casting or spinning. For fly
fishermen a slightly heavier 9-10 weight fly rod is the best.
As the same of the rods, at least 2 reels with a capacity for
200 yards of a 20 pounds line. If you are fly
fishermen, a reel with good capacity of line like large
arbor size 7/8 or 9/10.
All kind of lines from 20 pounds to 65 pounds, we prefer the
multifilament like Spider Wire; Power Pro or a simple Dacron.
Good leaders and swivels are highly suggested, bring plenty of
them. Fly line must be a sinker tip line to present the
flies closer to the bottom.
A heavy mono leader tipped with steel wire is
essential.
Lures and Flies.
All kind of lures like Rapala Magnum, Rapala
Countdown, Rebel Fast Track, Spoonbill. All types of lures that swim on fast waters and dives quickly.
Because of the dark color of the water, lure’s colors like fire
tigers, oranges, red heads and chartreuse are the favorites.
Lure size from 4 ½ inches and up is ok. Hooks have to be extra strong. Flies: The Payara take
a variety of large streamers, but prefer heavily dressed
ones
on a 4/0 saltwater hook.
Clouser Minnows,
Lefty's Deceivers, Poppers.
Accomodation.
Accomodation for fishermen is in bungalows with two person rooms
with private bathrooms and mosquito nets. These bungalows are
constructed in the typical style for the region (wood with palm
rooves). Central Lodge building with Dining Area, Kitchen,
Toilets, Common Areas to Relax, Hammocks.
General Equipment.
Lightweight shirts and pants, wide brimmed hat or cap, a lightweight waterproof jacket,
a polar fleece sweatshirt, an extra pair of sandals or sneakers,
polarized sunglasses, sunblock, lip protector.
