World class fly fishing for salmon on Tungufljot river in Iceland, this is reasonable priced self catering opportunity. The Tungufljot is one of the most beautiful and prolific rivers in Iceland. The 2009 season in the Tungufljot closed more than 1400 salmon caught. Tungufljot is located in southern Iceland 100 km from Reykjavik.  

Tungufljot. The Tungufljot river system is one of the biggest in Iceland, the main river is about 30 km long, three attractive tributarys joins the main river on the upper part. From the estuary were Tungufjot joins the large clacier river Hvitá up to the waterfall Faxi is about 10 km, from Faxi up to the top waterfall (no salmon can enter) is about 20 km. Tungufljot has very clear water and steady water level, will not matter if it rains or not the waterlevel on Tungufljot is very steady because it come mainly from spring sources. The stability is why the Tungufljot produces such high numbers of salmon per rod/day. It is never low. It is seldom if ever coloured due to flooding and heavy rains. The beauty of the river, Tungufljot is extremely scenic. The river has everything to offer for fly fishermen: long pools, waterfalls, fast streams, many islands and the flora is magnificient.

Fly Fishing. Tungulfjot salmon beat is 30 km long and there are huge number of fly fishing pools on the river with great number of salmon that will ensure you an amazing fishing experience. We receive only small groups of fishermen at a time so you can be sure of very exclusive fly fishing for salmon. Number of rods fishing will be limited in 4 rods in June, 6 rods in July and 8 rods in September-October. There is also possibility to share a rod, also tvo fishermen who fish only one person at a time. Then also the price is also much cheaper. Guiding is not included but guide can be booked as an extra option.

Flies. Good flies for Tungufljot river are for example Black Sheep, Frances, Snaelda, Blue Charm, Sunray Shadow and Willie Gunn. Most salmon are caught on 1" tubes.

Fly Fishing Tackle. For fly fishing for salmon on Tungufljot we recommend 12-15 ' foot double handed rods for lines #8-11 and suitable fly reels with good quality brakes. Floating, sink tip or intermediate shooting heads are most used fly lines but please bring also medium sinking shooting head for possible high water conditions. It is mandatory to have your fishing gear disinfected on arrival at Keflavík international airport.

Accomodation. At Tungufljot self catering fishing lodge there are four comfortable summerhouses, each for two rods. The summerhouses are close to the waterfall Faxi in a beautiful suroundings. There are beds for 4 people in two rooms. In a comfortable livingroom is a TV and a radio. On veranda there is is a jacuzzi and a gas barbeque.

Travel Arrangements. Fly fishing trips to Island, Tungufljot will be arranged during the fishing season, ask for availability. Guests will take an interational flight to Keflavik airport and continue with rental car to fly fishing destination, Tungulfjot river. It's only about an hour and 30 minutes driving from Reykjavik, Keflavik airport to the lodge.
