Tarpon, permit and bonefish
fly fishing in Belize. Turneffe Flats is regarded as one of the world’s paradises for tropical fishing.
For years Turneffe Flats has been known as one of the
Caribbean's premier saltwater fly fishing destinations. The
diversity of our saltwater flats fishing sets us apart from
other destinations and the opportunity to catch bonefish, permit
and tarpon on a given day makes Turneffe Flats one of the rare
spots to pursue a "Flats Grand Slam," the landing all three
species in a single day.
Fly Fishing. The huge Turneffe atoll area consists of
several different types of flats that can be waded and fished
from special locally made skiffs (boats). The fishing season is
year round and fishing will be done mainly with single hand fly
rod. There are not many tropical
fishing places in the world which
can offer as varied and rich fishing as that of Turneffe Flats.
The fishing guide will take you by boat to a range
of interesting and challenging fishing locations and show where
and when to cast. The experienced guides know the local waters
intimately and speak fluent English.
Species and season. Bonefishing is a mainstay of
fishing here, with miles of crystal clear, wadeable flats. While
wading Turneffe's extensive turtle grass flats, you will sight
fish to large schools of bonefish as well as smaller groups and
singles. Bonefishing is consistently good throughout the
year. For the past decade, increasing numbers of saltwater
anglers have developed a serious interest in the elusive permit.
Turneffe Flats is one of a select group of saltwater
destinations where you can experience the excitement of flats
fishing for tailing permit with a reasonable opportunity to
catch one.
Permit fishing is also consistently available
throughout the year. Because tarpon are migratory, they are
somewhat seasonal. Although some tarpon are around throughout
the year, our prime season generally begins in April and
continues to mid October. June, July and August are usually the
best months for tarpon fishing. Most of our migratory tarpon are
in the 70-90 pound range, but we see a few 150-200 pound
monsters each year.
Fly Fishing Tackle.
For fly fishing in Turneffe we recommend 9 ' feet single handed
rods for lines #8-11 and suitable fly reels with good quality
brakes and 200-300 m strong backing. Floating tropical WF fly
lines are most used fly lines. Flies like Gotcha and Bonefish
bitter will work well for bonefish. Crab imitations work for
permit and Cockroach and Black Death flies for tarpon.
Accomodation. The guests will be accommodated at Turneffe
lodge. Double bedrooms with air-conditioning.
The social center is the Main Lodge. Breathtaking views from the
upper and lower decks makes the lodge a favorite spot for
visitors.
The Main Lodge includes dining
area and bar. Meals are a tasty combination of Belizean and
International dishes served family-style. Fresh seafood, local
produce and home-baked pastries are standard fare.
Travel Arrangements. Fishing trips to Turneffe will be arranged throughout
the year as the fishing season is 365 days/year. The packages
can be booked according to the client’s preferred dates subject
to availability. Anglers take an international flight to Belize
City and continue with 90 minutes boat ride to Turneffe atoll.
