Fly Fishing - Scotland, Tweed

Fly fishing trips to one of the best salmon rivers in Europe, Tweed River. Fishmaster arranges hosted fly fishing trips to the Tweed on October-November, next trip will be 7-12th November 2010. This is absolute prime time of the autumn season. The destination will be the Nest beat in upper Tweed, close Galashiels and the host will be Jouni Rauha who is the head guide of the Fishmaster company. There is room for 5 persons including host on this trip. We have also a local fishing guide, ghillie who helps us with fishing.

Tweed. The Tweed is located in the Southern border of Scotland and is one of the best salmon rivers in Europe, average of 15000 salmon will be caught there every year. It is very famous and one of Scotland's big four salmon rivers. The Tweed fishing season starts already on 1 st of February and there is good spring fishing season from March until the end of May but the main salmon run is from September to November. The fishing on the Tweed is mainly catch and release fishing. In October and November many salmon over 20 lb mark are taken each autumn. Tweed certainly has the big numbers of salmon. The best of back end fishing is from early October to the end of November.

Fly Fishing. Our fly fishing group will fish the Nest beat on upper Tweed, close Galashiels. The beat is on the left bank and is approx 2,5 km long, maximum number of rods is 5, so there will be plenty of room for every fisherman. The beat consists of 5 different pools: Rampy Pool, Boat Pool, House Pool, Policeman and Gullets. Only fly fishing is allowed and there are pools for all possible water levels. The beat is beautiful and easy to wade and cover well with fly. There is also a small comfortable fishing hut.

Fly Fishing Tackle. For fly fishing for salmon on Tweed we recommend 12-15 ' feet double handed rods for lines #8-11 and suitable fly reels with good quality brakes. Sink tip or intermediate shooting heads are most used fly lines but please bring also medium sinking fly line for possible high water conditions.

Flies. Good salmon fly patterns for Tweed are: Black Sheep, Willie Gunn, Munro Killer, Thunder & Lightning, Allys Shrimp and Garry.

Accomodation for guests will be in charming Scottish house. In the cottage there is a toilet, a shower, a living room, a well equipped kitchen and several single and double bedrooms. We will cook the food together in accomodation or dine at local pubs in nearby village which offer good food and drinks.

Travel Arrangements. Fishing trips to Tweed river are always hosted trips. Anglers will first take flight to Edinburgh. At the airport they will meet host Jouni Rauha from Fishmaster and then continue to Tweed valley by car, it is only an hour drive. During the fishing trip Jouni will take care of all car transports and after fishing he will give the guests a ride back to Edinburgh airport.
