| Salmon fly fishing on one
of the best atlantic salmon rivers in Russia, Umba River. Nowhere else in the world there
is so much atlantic salmon as there is in the rivers of Kola
Peninsula, the
average size of fly caught salmon in Umba is about 4-5 kg. Every
season many salmon over 8 kg will be caught, the biggest caught
was
22 kg.
Umba River.
Umba is for the guy who is seeking demanding superior quality
fishing. AND- Umba is also tough wading and long (healthy)
walks. We have no fancy hovercrafts or jet boats, who can ferry
you up or down the river the whole day - except on the lower
beats in Umba. The Krivetz River (upper section of Umba) is a
fast river with strong currents, big boulders and strenuous
wading on slippery boulders, long casts and monster salmon. Umba
is a demanding chase for silver and suited for the experienced
and committed Salmon angler prepared battle for his salmon.
Fly fishing. The season
for this excellent salmon fly fishing is from mid May to mid October. Umba
is very beautiful and
suits very well for fly fishing. Fly fishing will be done at Lower
Umba beat and its sideriver Krivetz beat and during the best fishing
weeks also on the Varzuga river. There is always local fishing guide
available, the guide will show all pools and how these should be
fished. There are only 20 fly fishermen at this
9,5 km long beat at a time. Both single and double handed fly rods can be
used on Umba and Varzuga rivers (7-10, rod length
9'-15'). Fishing is 'catch and release' only.
Fly Fishing Tackle.
Most fishing today on Umba is carried out with
modern double hand rods between 12 ˝ and 15 feet for line 8 -11
– Regarding reel. Please remember to bring some reliable reels
that won’t let you down when your + 30lbs salmon take off. Reel
for double handled rod should contain minimum 200 meters backing
– Single handed reel minimum 150 meters backing. Buy the best
available gear to avoid any failure – Cheap gear will always let
you down. Lines:
Floating, sink tip or intermediate shooting heads are most used
fly lines but please bring also medium sinking shooting head for
possible high water conditions.
Leaders: 12 – 14 – 16 – 18 – 20 – 24 lbs braking strength.
Flies.
Good fly patterns for Umba and Krivetz are for example:
Green Highlander, Red Butt, Silver Doctor,
Thunder & Lightning, Cascade, Black
Francis and Billy Butt.
Accomodation. The accomodation for
fly
fishermen is in the main building of Umba Lodge which is situated on the
riverbank of the Umba river. This charming timber building has 10 double bedrooms all with own toilet and shower. In the dining room of the house the guests
will enjoy delicious meals and drinks.
There is a big sitting lounge with cosy sofas and open fireplace,
a fly-tying corner and a bar. There is also a sauna in the Lodge.
Travel Arrangements. Fly fishing trips to Umba river will be arranged throughout the fishing
season and the packages can be booked according to the client’s preferred
dates. Anglers take
flight to Murmansk and meet guide at airport. Trip continues by bus to
Umba and will take 5 hours. Fishing week starts always on
Saturday and ends next Saturday.
