Fly Fishing - Iceland, West Ranga

World class fly fishing for atlantic salmon on West Ranga river in Iceland. The West Ranga is one of the most beautiful and prolific rivers in Europe.

West Ranga. The 2009 season in the West Rangá closed with 10749 salmon caught. This put river in first in number of salmon caught in Iceland for 2009 season. Amazing number of salmon from one salmon river. Day after day there were landed over 100 salmon in a single day. The year 2009 was the second best year ever on the West Ranga, the year 2008 there were landed even more fish, total of 14315 salmon. These two seasons on the West Ranga are both historical records on a Icelandic salmon river. The stability is why the West Rangá produces such high numbers of salmon per rod/day. It is never low. It is seldom if ever coloured due to flooding and heavy rains. West Ranga is located in southern part of Iceland about 85 km South-East from Reykjavik.

Fly Fishing. Every day the guide will take you to different fly fishing pools on the river West Ranga with great number of salmon that will ensure you an amazing fishing experience. We receive only small groups of fishermen at a time so you can be sure that any detail will be taken care of, just relax and enjoy your fishing. We have only 2 fishermen for 1 English-speaking guide who is expert on the river. Number of rods fishing will be in June 12 rods, in July 14 rods, in August September and October 16 rods. West Ranga is fished in two daily 6-hour sessions; from 7:00 am to 1:00 p.m. and from 4:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. Because of the lengthy fishing day, rod sharing is popular giving each angler 6 hours of daily fishing. The river is divided into two-rod beats in a rotation that changes after lunch each day. All the pools on West Ranga are easily accessible by car and little walking is required. The West Ranga beat is 30 km long, consisting both banks.

Fly Fishing Tackle. For fly fishing for salmon on West Ranga we recommend 12-15 ' foot double handed rods for lines #8-11 and suitable fly reels with good quality brakes. Floating, sink tip or intermediate shooting heads are most used fly lines but please bring also medium sinking shooting head for possible high water conditions. If you bring your own gear it is mandatory to have it disinfected on arrival at Keflavík international airport.

Flies. Good flies for West Ranga are for example Frances, Black & Blue, Black Sheep, Snaelda, Sunray Shadow and Willie Gunn. Most salmon are caught on 1" tubes.

Clothing. You should bring warm and waterproof clothes since it can get wet and cold even in mid-summer when temperatures may drop down to 0° C, the average being between 8 and 15°. The temperature can rise over 20° C on warm summer days.

Accomodation. At West Ranga full service fishing lodge there are 18 newly built twin rooms with private bathrooms. The lounge, bar and dining room at the lodge have recently been refurnished and there is also sauna and jacuzzi in the lodge.
